Violence Against Women: The Bloody Footprints, edited by Pau- line Bart and Eileen Geil Moran, is the second offering in a series of readers published by Sage, and sponsored by the Sociologists for Women in Society. This book grew from a special issue of Gender & Society focusing on violence against women. Bart and Moran, in the preface and introductions to the sections, provide a framework rooted in radical feminist and conflict theory to introduce the writ- ings by the contributing authors. The first section focuses on the types of violence against women, which runs the gamut from obscene phone calls to serial murder. Jane Caputi's The Sexual Politics of Murder is an essay on how the torture and murder of women is founded in a system of male supremacy, and as such, falls into the category of hate crime. In an article by Diana Scully and Joseph Marolla, rape is examined using anecdotal information arising from interviews with 114 convicted rapists. The thesis supported is that rape is more than a pathological act committed by a small number of aberrant men, but rather an extreme point on a continuum of sexually aggressive acts which reward males and victimize females. An essay on incest by Judith Herman, punctuated with anecdotal accounts of incest survivors, argues that what she calls the feminist perspective best explains the existing data on this topic. Sexual assault in the workplace is presented in a somewhat con- fusing article by Beth Schneider. While data were collected and reported separately for lesbians and heterosexual women, the rele- vance of sexual orientation to workplace assault is not readily apparent. Schneider used survey results to discuss characteristics and experiences of respondents who reported some form of work- related sexual assault. Because of fairly severe methodological weaknesses in sampling, these data are not particularly helpful, in that the results may not be adequately representative of the popula- tion for meaningful interpretation. Similarly, the self-reported feel- ings about, and reactions to obscene phone calls by a nonrandom sample of 58 women was used by Carole Sheffield to conclude that
