GENETIC MANIPULATION OF HUMAN FETUSES

Abstract
Humans have a remarkable ability to adapt to change not merely
by surviving, but by thriving-learning to bend the natural order of the
universe to suit our needs and desires. During the Neolithic Revolution,
humanity formed large communities for the first time and created
methods that guided once wild flora and fauna into a spectacular
speciation of usable and sustainable food sources. Today, the old-as-
life-itself method of procreating is being reconsidered. Every
revolution in technology has resulted in enormous changes to the
societies, cultures, and laws surrounding that technology. This paper
analyzes the emerging field of biotechnology and its development of
advanced genetic manipulation such as CRISPR Cas-9. In addition, it
analyzes the origins, uses, and potential for CRISPR Cas-9 and how a
centuries-old legal system might adapt to provide critical regulation
for this emerging field.
By providing insight into how technologies develop and how the
public, politicians, and scientists plan to safeguard against the
unforeseen dangers of new technology, I will argue that the method of
making of law after a dispute arises is too slow. It is not only necessary
to preemptively set regulations to protect the public from any
unintended
rFor Jonathan and Mom, I miss you every day.
I want to thank Deborah, Bridgette, and Phillip my family and genetic legacy who inspire and
give me hope. My Father Wayne, the most moral and ethical man I have ever known. And to the
educators who guided, mentored, and endured a difficult student, Janice Rowley who inspired
me to create, Leslie Jewkes who made me dream, Dan Taylor who taught me to ask questions,
Dr. Susan Polster who helped me find my voice, Dr. Tyson Chappell who showed me the beauty
in biology, Professor David Friedman who gave me perspective, and Professor Bruce Howell
who showed me what it means to be a teacher.
