Rarely is one privileged to pay formal tribute to a man as mul-
tifaceted. as Arvo Van Alstyne. His passing, at too young an age,
deeply saddened not only his family but also his many friends and
the countless others whose lives he had touched.
Eulogies paid Arvo at the funeral services described him as
warm and loving and family oriented, which unquestionably he
was. He and Ruth had a beautiful relationship. Each of their six
children paid a special tribute at the services, tributes that bore
eloquent testimony to the love that permeated the Van Alstyne
household. Arvo's remarkable professional accomplishments
seemed never to detract from the quality of the time he spent with

Yale University. During his college years he held many part-time
jobs but managed to combine these with an interest in athletics,
notably rowing. Upon graduation in 1943 with a degree in Interna-
tional Relations he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Even then Arvo
was the complete man.
World War II found him in California where he graduated at
the top of his naval flight class and where he and Ruth were mar-
ried. After the war's end they were back in New Haven. Arvo was
enrolled in the first post-war class at the Yale Law School, one of
the school's most brilliant classes. He was elected to the Order of
the Coif upon graduation.
The Van Alstynes returned to California where Arvo spent two
years as a law clerk with the California District Court of Appeals,
followed by three years as Deputy County Counsel for Los Angeles.
In these positions he was becoming known as the young lawyer
with the prodigious output of superb legal work.
During the same period the new UCLA Law School had been
