Lessons from Blackamerican Lawyers' Social

Justice Advocacy for Immigrant Muslim Lawyers

SHAJUTI HosSAIN*

* Shajuti Hossain is a policy advocacy lawyer with experience in housing policy and other
social justice areas. She has been a leader in immigrant Muslim and non-Muslim
organizations for over ten years. In the immigrant Muslim community, she has served on
her high school, college, and law school Muslim Students Associations, she was a youth
leader at her mosque, and has organized Muslims in social and spiritual gatherings outside
of institutions. She regularly engages with her Muslim network to seek and share advice
and opportunities. In the broader community, she has been a leader or active participant of
organizations whose interests include community service, environmental sustainability,
and public interest careers. She is also an active board member of the Duke Law Alumni
Association.
I would like to thank Musa Dajani, the co-editor of the UC Davis Social Justice
Law Review, for inviting me to write and publish this article. I am also grateful for the
public interest lawyers who took the time to talk through my ideas and share their
experiences on the ground: Rahmah Abdulaleem, Zahra Billoo, and Madihha Ahussain. I
am especially appreciative of Rahmah Abdulaleem, law student Nabintou Doumbia, legal
academic Patricia Muhammad, and my dear friend Yossra Hamid for their detailed and
valuable feedback.
I also want to acknowledge researcher (and friend) Lela Ali for being a stellar
example of how non-black immigrant Muslims can respectfully learn from Blackamerican
Muslims. I am grateful to my former law school professor Trina Jones for teaching Critical
Race Theory at Duke Law. I also honored to have the support of lawyer and friend
Mehwish Shaukat as we both journey into legal practice and writing together. I thank my
family for constantly encouraging me to read, write, and speak. Most importantly, I
acknowledge, appreciate, and honor Blackamericans - especially Blackamerican Muslims
- who have sacrificed everything for social justice advocacy. Their courage and
perseverance are inspirations for us all.
