      Ida Wells was, even by her own account, a
difficult woman.1 It is not difficult to see why. As the
nation's first prominent African American female
journalist and the founder of the nation's anti-lynching
movement in the late 19th century, she encountered
virulent racial and gender bias; anyone with her identity
