handle is hein.journals/swulr43 and id is 451 raw text is: USE A GUN AND YOU'RE DONE:' HOW 10-20-LIFE AND STAND YOUR GROUND TOGETHER HAVE A DISPARATE IMPACT ON FLORIDA CITIZENS INTRODUCTION In 2012, there were over 140 casualties due to mass shootings in the United States.2 Almost every week, there is a new yellow banner across the front page of CNN.com3 with the words Breaking News, announcing an incident involving a shooter and a gun. With the current surge of gun- related violence, people are searching for answers.4 The politically charged debate over guns reached a tipping point after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012.5 President Barak Obama stepped in soon after to announce a national plan to curb the violence which included, amongst other things, reinstating a ban on assault weapons, requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales from both public and private gun dealers, and prohibiting the possession of armor- piercing bullets by anyone other than members of the military and law enforcement.,6 Although much of the public debate over firearms focuses 1.
