1971, Harvard Law School. This project was supported with a 1990 Loyola Law School summer
research grant. I owe a significant debt of gratitude to the following people, who provided construc-
tive criticism of earlier drafts of the Article: Robin Barnes, KimberI6 Crenshaw, Neil Gotanda,
Linda Greene, Charles Jones, Man Matsuda, Stephanie Phillips, john powell, Jon Sylvester, and
Kendall Thomas. Finally, I am grateful for the long-standing support of Derrick Bell, who induced
me to enter law teaching and who inspires me to speak in my own words. Professor Bell's teaching
and scholarly approach, which I share, are summed up in these words:
When I entered teaching after a dozen years in civil rights work, I determined that I would try
to bring to my classrooms and my scholarship both my legal skills and my experience and
perspective as a Black man in this country. In my view, neither the students, nor my life-long
commitment to the racial struggle, would be well served if I simply sought to emulate the
teaching approach and the scholarly outlook of my white counterparts.
