How Does a Uniform Citation
Guide Fail to be Uniform? A Review
of the Canadian Guide to Uniform
Legal Citation, 7th ed.*
Joanne V Colledge** and La M. Lapointe***
I. INTRODUCTION
A new edition of the Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation (the
Guide)l is published every four years by McGill Law Journal's editorial
and management boards.2 The seventh edition of the Guide arrived in
bookstores and libraries across Canada in August 2010. It seemed
fitting to review the Guide in 2011, a year that marks its twenty-fifth
anniversary.3 Since the Guide's inception, its goal has been to allow
authors to accurately communicate their intended message4 and
allow for the efficient and reliable recognition of legal sources, an
important requirement for the advancement of legal scholarship.s
Normally, a new edition of the Guide causes little consternation,
aside from some law students grumbling about the cost of the newest
edition. This edition is different and support for it appears mixed.6
