The Impact of Building the Wall on the

                Criminal Justice System

                              MELANIE REID

If there's one thing Donald Trump has consistently advocated while on
the campaign trail this past year, it's building a wall and having
Mexico pay for it.' Trump has argued the following: (1) there are too
many illegal immigrants in the United States; (2) Latin American countries,
particularly Mexico, are exporting crime and poverty into the United
States; and (3) these actions have been financially draining on the nation.2
In addition, this situation has a disastrous effect on U.S. jobseekers who are
unable to find employment because of illegal immigration.3 Along with
building the wall, Trump wants to triple the number of Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to strictly enforce immigration laws,
detain and return all illegal aliens apprehended at the border, defund
sanctuary cities which refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement,
subject those who overstay their temporary visas to criminal penalties, end
automatic citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants, increase
standards for the admission of refugees and asylum-seekers, and place a
temporary hold on green cards issued to foreign workers to force
employers to hire domestically.4
There have been several criticisms of this building the wall strategy.5
One writer from the Huffington Post recently wrote that Trump is indeed

1 According to Trump's campaign website, the first of his core principles of immigration reform
is, A nation without borders is not a nation. There must be a wall across the southern border.
