                        INTRODUCTION
     Born in  1920, Edythe  Evelyn Gandy   emerged  as one  of
Mississippi's most prominent political figures, earning national
recognition as the first woman  elected to a State Treasurer's
position. Evelyn Gandy, an attorney, career politician, sister, and
daughter, died in 2007, having served her native state for more
than forty years. An enigmatic figure, Gandy rose to power as a
Southern Democrat  and remained loyal to her party as many of its
