I. INTRODUCTION

       Global animal  law is a novel and promising discrete branch
of international law. This  area of  law acknowledges   the  trans-
boundary  reality of human-animal interactions and demands, which
must  accordingly also be  global in nature.' Global animal law  is
multi-directional. It operates horizontally as comparative  animal
law. It also engages in vertical research, studying animal law on the
international, supranational  and  regional level. The  increasing
emergence   of animal matters on the international plane, and their
newly  gained  prominence   in  public discussion of  international
character, are argued to give hope beyond  illusion - the hope that
