The Hon. Mr Justice Beatson FBA,
President of the Academy 2007-2009


  After studying law at Oxford and qualifying
as a barrister, Sir Jack Beatson taught law,
first at the University of Bristol, and from 1973
at Merton College, Oxford. He specialised in
administrative law, contract law and the law of
restitution. From 1983  he  combined  his
academic work with practice as a barrister at
Essex Court Chambers.
  Between 1989 and 1994 he was a member of
the Law Commission  of England and Wales.
He was the Commissioner responsible for work
in contract and commercial law, civil evidence,
damages, administrative law, and financial
services. His work led to the Carriage of Goods
by Sea Act 1992, the Civil Evidence Act 1995,
the Private International Law (Miscellaneous
Provisions) Act 1995, and the Damages Act
1996.
  Between  1994  and 2003, when   he was
appointed to the High Court, he was Rouse
Ball Professor of English Law at the Univer-
sity of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's
College, Cambridge. He was  the Founding
Director of the Cambridge Centre for Public


Law   and  has held  visiting positions in
Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore
and the United States.
  He  served as a member of the Competition
Commission  between  1995  and 2001  and
conducted a review of Bailiff Law for the Lord
Chancellor's Department in 1999, which was
largely implemented in the Tribunals and
Enforcement Act 2007.
  His major publications are Anson's Law of
Contract, Administrative Law:  Cases and
Materials 1985 and 1989, with M. Matthews,
and Human   Rights: The 1998 Act and  the
European Convention, 2000, with S. Grosz and
P. Duffy. He also co-edited Jurists Uprooted:
German  Speaking  Emigr6 Lawyers  in 20th
Century Britain with R. Zimmermann which
records the contributions of 6migr6 and refu-
gee legal scholars to English law.
  His  non  professional interests include
walking, gardening and trying to relax. He
has been married to Charlotte for almost 35
years. They have one daughter and had a son
who died aged 27.
