PRIZE ESSAY COMPETITION.
No. i.-The nine essays can hardly be described
as of striking merit, either in matter or treatment.
The prize has been awarded to Mr. J. K. MANNOOCH,
LL.B., of 24, Ribblesdale Place, Lancaster, who
was articled on 27th February, 1911, to Mr. L. R.
J)onisthorpe, of Swan House, E.C., and further
articled on 27th December, r911, to Mr. A. C.
Dickson, of 17, Winckley Street, Preston. A
cheque for two guineas has been forwarded to
Mr. Mannooch, and his essay is printed in this
number of the Journal. The runner up was
Mr. H. J. HOWLAND, of 6, Osborne Place, Plymouth,
who gained the prize in this competition last year.
NOTES OF THE MONTH.
IN a later column will be found the dates of the various
solicitors' examinations in 1913. There is no alteration in
subjects.
TIHE following new regulation, to come into force as from
the 1st January, 1913, applies to the Intermediate :-An
articled clerk may give notice for such part of the Inter-
mediate Examination as relates to trust accounts and book-
keeping at the examination at which he is, or, if exempt,
would be, entitled to give notice for such part of the
examination s relates to law, or at any Intermediate Ex-
amination thereafter, but must obtain a certificate of having
passed in trust accounts and book-keeping before he gives
notice for the Final Examination.
TBE June Intermediate results show 39 per cent. failed in
Law, and 31 per cent. in Trust Accounts. Three hours
were allowed, instead of two, for the paper on the last-
named subject. We are surprised to find so many failed in
Law, and suppose the minimum of 40 per cent. in each
paper must be responsible.
THE June Final results are even better than we anticipated.
We thought the failures would be about 28 per cent., they
are actually only i9 per cent. This is a very good result
indeed.
THE June Ilonours List is a fairly long one. With such
a small plough at the Final, a good many candidates were
sure to qualify, and the extreme niceness of the Honours
papers must have helped the list. Out of 133 candidates
who gave notice for Honours, 27 appear in the list, i.e.,
20 per cent. were successful. In one sense, however, the
list is disappointing-only 2 names appear in the First Class,
and 9 in the Second, while the Third Class has 16 names.
The Mackrell Prize falls to a man in the Second Class.
The result is curiously like that in June, 1911, when there
were 131 candidates, and the list contained 25 names,
2 first class, 7 second, and 16 third.
THERE are so many substitutes for the Preliminary that 85
candidates for July cannot be termed bad, though it is five
less than last year and 22 less than in 1io. The failures
in July were over 42 per cent., and only half-a-dozen
candidates passed with distinction.
LAW Society studentships of 640 have been awarded to
Mr. Arthur Simpson Fellows, who was educated at Wolver-
hampton Grammar School and is articled with Mr. Rowland
Tildesley, of Willenhall and Bilston ; Mr. Evelyn Lovell
Hewitt, who was educated at King's School, 'Bruton, and
Repton School, and is articled with Mr. F. A. P. Sylvester,
of Trowbridge; Mr. William Noel Hazard, articled with
Mr. R. C. Mayhew, of Lowestoft ; Mr. John Charlesworth,
articled with Mr. W. W. Gibson, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne;
and Mr. Andrew Barrie, articled with Mr. J. W. Robson,
of Manchester.
