2   Dan   Beebe   Appointed 'Of Counsel' to Witt/
    Kieffer's  Sports  Leadership Practice
 Witt/Kieffer, a leading executive search jirm, has announced the ap-
 pointment offormer Big 12 Conference commissioner Dan Beebe,
JD., as Of Counselfor its Sports Leadership Practice. Beebe, who
has nearly 30 years of experience in conference administration and
NCAA   rules enforcement, will support Witt/Kieffer in the recruit-
ment of leaders for athletic departments at major colleges and uni-
versities, as well as sports foundations and charities and professional
athletic organizations.


3   Social  Media   and  the  Issue of Respect
There is a tendency for athletics departments to place stringent
restrictions on the use ofsocial media by student-athletes. On one
hand, social media use should not be used to violate athletics de-
partment or institutionalpolicies on such standard subjects as sexual
harassment, bullying, respecful conduct, or conformance with
NC4A   or governance association rules. On the other hand, every
student-athlete and staff member has a right to free speech.

5   Court   Turns  Away   Student  Athlete  and   his
    Breach   of Contract   Claim   Against  College
A federal judge from the District of Vermont has granted sum-
mary judgment and delivered a victory to Middlebury College and
the school' athletic director, which were named in a lawsuit by a
former student athlete, who alleged that he was unfairly dismissed
from the school' hockey team and was not given a legally sufficient
opportunity to appeal that decision.

    Department with Discrimination and
    Retaliation
Two current and one former employee of the University of Tennessee
Athletic Department sued the school last month for discrimination
in the Eastern District of Tennessee, alleging 'ystemic bias and the
implementation ofa testosterone wall.

9   Court  Dismisses Reeves Nelson Suit against
    Sports   Illustrated
Former UCLA   men' basketball student-athlete Reeves Nelson'
defamation lawsuit against Time Inc., the parent company ofSports
Illustrated, has been dismissed.
