Digital Silk Road - The Role of Cross-border

                 E-commerce in Facilitating Trade

                   Marta MAJCHERCZYK, Bai Shuqiang*

Abstract: E-commerce has been developing since the beginning of the Internet era. All over the
world, there have been numerous examples of both amazing successes and tragic failures of com-
panies that transfer traditional trade to the virtual infinity of the Internet. Research shows that one
of the main reasons for either succeeding or failing is undoubtedly customer experience and satis-
faction. Furthermore, logistics is one of the main aspects of trade that strongly influences satisfac-
tion. Along with the emergence of cross-border e-commerce (CBEC), numerous new challenges
must be faced and overcome to meet the even higher requirements of digital customers. It is unde-
niable that CBEC plays an important role in accelerating the development of countries' economy
and local industries, such as logistics, especially those focused on providing services for retail
trade. In recent years, CBEC has become an important part of the China-led Belt and Road Initia-
tive, especially its digital dimension, namely the Digital Silk Road, through a combination of the dig-
ital economy and China's new strategic vision of international cooperation. This paper aims at pre-
senting CBEC's main benefits for international trade along with challenges created by its rapid de-
velopment, and analyzes possible solutions, including Digital Silk Road's growing support in terms
of infrastructure and potential markets.
