Undermined
What the Interior Department
is doing and why
By Edward A. Slavin, Jr.

An independent judiciary is the
safeguard of our liberty and of our
property under the Constitution.
-Charles Evans Hughes, 1907.
Go into any courtroom, and there
will preside an independent judge
beholden to no government power.
-President Ronald Reagan, 1988.

You are an administrative law judge
(AU), appointed to decide cases inde-
pendently, without interference. Lately
the interference has been deafening, and
the threats to judicial independence
chilling. Storm clouds on the horizon are
growing. Your chief judge has been fired
for supporting the principle of judicial
independence, having testified about
harassment, intimidation, and threats to
fire you and your colleagues.
