DOCTRINE OF LAPSE - A FRAYED LINK FOR EXPANSION OF THE BRITISH
EMPIRE IN INDIA

I. INTRODUCTION
Today India is considered one of the leading emerging countries in the world for
its democracy, financial wherewithal and intellectual talent. If this conclusion is
universally accepted, then modem India's seeds of democracy and intellectual capacity
may have been sown when the first British agent set foot in the court of the Mughal
emperor Jahangir in 1609 to seek permission to build an English factory on the western
coast of India'. In 1949, the British soldiers officially departed through the Gateway of
India ending an association of 349 years2 that completely changed the presently
constituted territory of India and also the rest of South East Asia.
One of the most discussed and debated Governor-General of the British Empire in
India was Lord Dalhousie.4 Dalhousie is credited for making India modem5 based on his

Countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka constitute South
East Asia. Although Mynamar (formerly Burma) and Afghanistan were also part of British
Empire in the Indian Subcontinent.
