                  0. V. Martyniuk Crimes against Woman's Health under Lithuanian Statute
The article deals with crimes against woman's health under three versions ofLithuanian Statute. Attention
has been drawn to the main definitions and legal concepts of criminal law in the 16th century as well as factors
which influenced on the level of criminal's punishment. Compensation has been analyzed as a special legal
institute of the system of punishments under Lithuanian Statute.
In accordance with Lithuanian statute all crimes which object was woman's rights were divided on crimes
against the person and crimes against property. Crimes which object was woman's health were considered quite
dangerous activities among crimes against the person in Lithuanian and Russian State as well as Polish-
Lithuanian Commonwealth. According to the degree of guilt deliberate crimes were punished more severely than
unintentional crimes. Combination of crime against woman's health with other crimes were considered an
aggravating circumstance.
One of the most popular types of punishments which was paid to the victim for injuries was a
compensation. It was understood as a certain sum of money which was paid to the victim for physical and moral
damages. According to Lithuanian Statute the amount of compensation for crimes against women was twice as
much as the one for crimes against men. The Statute specified the amount of compensation. Social, religious and
family status of a victim influenced the amount of penalty.
According to the provision of three versions of Lithuanian Statute personal rights of upper class was
protected by more severe penalties comparing to the women's rights of the lower class. At the same time further
versions of Lithuanian Statute increased lower class of women who had the right to compensation for injuries.
During 16th century the amount of compensation in favor of woman of lower class increased and the amount of
compensation to women of upper class was the same.
