Scientific, Artistic and Documentary Investigation of a Picassian Anonymous Oil Painting

Chillon Abstract been investigated in a global manner, including IR reflectometric analysis, non-destructive A n anonymous oil painting (The Comedians), with several and relevant Picassian features, has pigment analysis with Raman spectroscopy, precise photographic observations and several comparative studies regarding its artistic and stylistic characteristics. The identified pigments (zinc white, ocher earth, vermillion, ultramarine blue and charcoal) are in good agreement with those usually used by Picasso between the last decade of the 19th century and the first of 20th. Moreover, a comparative analysis of the artistic style has shown similar artistic qualities between the artwork investigated and some of Picasso's paintings of the Rose Period. With all the obtained results, it has been possible to conclude that The Comedians could be, perhaps, a final version of Comedian and Child, a pastel painted by Picasso in 1905 and preserved in the National Museum of Art of Osaka.
