Al-Hadith:
Its Authority And Authenticity
DR. MUHAMMAD ABDUL RAUF *
I INTRODUCTION
The study of Hadith is a wide subject and its literature is exceed-
ingly abundant. The theme lends itself to many possibilities; and the
religious value attached to the pursuit inspired scholars of all ages to take
up the challenge enthusiastically. Moreover, absence of an official
undertaking to compile the Hadiths from the mouths of the surviving
Companions of the Prophet, who were the first witnesses, or from their
disciples in the next immediate generation of Islam, left the door open to
individual initiatives, thus giving rise to numerous studies on the subject.
This paper will be confined to the examination of the status of
Hadith as an authoritative binding source of Islam, next to the Holy
Qur'an, the Word of Allah, the Almighty God. This leads us to the
consideration of the question of the authenticity of Hadith and the meas-
ures and safeguards the founders of the Hadith Sciences stipulated to test
and assess the degree of the reliability of any given hadith. This will also
lead to the discussion of the process of the compilation of Hadith in
writing, and to the examination of criticism levelled against Hadith in
recent times. Before considering any of these topics, however, the term
hadith has to be clearly defined, and the relationship of Hadith to the
Holy Qur'an must be considered.
2 DEFINITION AND CATEGORIES OF AL-HADITH
Al-Hadith may be best defined as the total records of the words
and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him
