Labor-Management Relations
Buffalo: Brian Becker and Craig Olson are
investigating the relationship between strike
activity and stock prices.
Janice M. Beyer (with Harrison M. Trice of
Cornell University) is studying     how   joint
union-management efforts are related to the
implementation of a personnel policy. She is
also examining the relationship between objec-
tive and subjective indicators of union power
and how each affects supervisors' perceptions of
union power.
Howard Foster has initiated an investigation
of decision criteria in grievance arbitration,
relying heavily on published arbitration de-
cisions.
Olson is continuing his research on public
sector strike policies. The project includes an
analysis of the impact of factfinding, interest
arbitration, strike penalty enforcement, and
school aid formulas on strike frequency and
duration.

Durham: Richard Brown's paper, From
Donovan to Where? Interpretations of Industrial
Relations in Britain Since 1968, will be pub-
lished soon in A. Stewart's Contemporary Brit-
ain: Aspects and Approaches (Routledge and
Kegan Paul).
David Bright is working on the development
of a model of third-party intervention in indus-
trial dispites, which he will apply to the (Brit-
ish) Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration
Service (ACAS).
Robin Smith is studying industrial relations
in South Africa, for a Ph.D. at the University of
York.
McMaster: Harish Jain is working on two
projects on industrial relations and microelec-
tronics technology. The first, a study of trade
union policies in relation to microelectronics
technology, involves questionnaires and inter-
views with selected trade union leaders. The
second analyzes the role of public policy with
regard to microelectronics technology and the
