To read this report is to experience
the anxiety of parenthood as well as the
terror of childhood in a country at war
with its own children.
HUMAN RIGHTS: FROM RHETO-
RIC TO REALITY, edited by Tom
Campbell, et al., (Oxford, U.K.:
Basil Blackwell Ltd., 1986), 262 pp.,
$19.95 paperback.
The above volume is a collection of
essays on aspects of human rights
edited by faculty from the University of
Glasgow School of Law. While the vol-
ume contains interesting discussions of
general principles of human rights, such
as analytical techniques which may be
useful in incorporating human rights
into the legal process, most readers will
be unwilling to spend the time attempt-
ing to translate the unnecessarily recon-

dite prose into understandable English.
This is unfortunate because the volume
also contains some worthwhile essays
on specific subjects including women's
rights, the right to consent to medical
treatment, and the right to trade union
membership. The essay on women's
rights, for example, focuses on those
rights which arise from biological and
societal differences between men and
women. Discussed in depth are the
right to bear and nurture children, and
the right to economic and political rec-
ognition for women's role in the family
structure. The essay concludes that the
Western emphasis on removing discrim-
ination may ultimately contribute to the
inadequate consideration of women's
rights.
The volume, in its entirety, is a valu-
able resource for the study of applied
human rights. The reader, however, is
required to commit an inordinate
amount of time to comprehending the
volume's abstruse language.
