From Big Data predictions about population movements in the Mediterranean, to Canada's use of automated decision-making in immigra- tion and refugee applications, to artificial intelligence lie detectors deployed at European borders, States are keen to explore the use of new technologies, yet often fail to take into account profound human rights ramifications and real impacts on human lives. Our recent report, Technological Testing Grounds: Migration Management Experiments and Reflections from the Ground Up, which can be found at: https://edri.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Technological- Testing-Grounds.pdf, attempts to interrogate the growing panopticon of surveillance and automation, foregrounding the lived experiences ofpeople on the move in order to highlight the all-encompassing and unregulated nature of these technological experiments on the frontiers of the border industrial complex.
