What a pity that some of you missed the latest 11th EFFL-Conference in Brussels. All
those who attended joined a high-level expert meeting discussing the newest devel-
    opments in food law.
One focus area was the new regulation on controls. This piece of legislation will in-
fluence dramatically the practice of both the national food surveillance authorities and
food business operators. It establishes new rules for the enforcement of food law in-
cluding new provisions on whistleblowing, financial penalties for fraudulent or decep-
tive practices and transparency of food surveillance control measures. Following the
aims to improve risk-based controls, mutual administrative assistance and better bor-
der controls for goods entering the Union from third countries, the new regulation fore-
sees also a uniform computerised information system to manage information and da-
ta in relation to official controls. The accompanying measures and tools developed by
the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission to fight food fraud are impres-
sive, ranging from scanning the web using specific algorithms on food fraud indica-
tors to annual analytical fingerprints of the geographical indication of foodstuffs by
    metabolomics.
Speakers from the EU Commission, industry associations, the authorities of the Mem-
ber States, professors and lawyers also discussed intensively other issues that will keep
the food law community busy over the next years. To name a few, the upcoming Union
list on authorised novel foods, the revision of authorisations for food additives, pro-
tected geographical indications and the fitness check for the General Food Law were
    hot topics.
Many attendees expressed their positive reception of the conference on the evalua-
tion sheets giving enthusiastic comments like, Highly relevant event, not to miss!
As already mentioned, some of you did not attend. However, you can take the op-
portunity and join the next 12th EFFL-Conference taking place again in Brussels on
25-26 October 2018. Don't miss this chance to catch up on the latest developments
in food law and to meet the food law community at an event, where experts talk to
    experts!

                                                               Andreas Meisterernst
