It is necessary to emphasize at the outset that nothing in
this paper should be regarded as an estimate or an insinuation
concerning the guilt or innocence of Charles Manson and his
codefendants. A number of things might be noted in this
connection. For one, the writers hold no firm opinion on the
matter. For another, they believe that to the degree that
courts appear to be operating with fairness and decency, they
ought to be allowed to make their way unattended by guesses
regarding the outcome they will or ought to reach. We would
strongly recommend the regimen followed by Justice Frank-
furter on matters regarding criminal trials. Frankfurter, it
may be remembered, refused to read newspaper reports, but
rather waited until the conclusion of a trial, and then went to

GILBERT GElS is Professor of Sociology at California State College,
Los Angeles. His current research interests have involved the study of
white-collar crime and the evaluation of action programs, particularly in
the area of drug addiction.
TED L. HUSTON is a Lecturer in Psychology at Vassar College, with
his major interest lying in the area of social psychology. He is presently
completing his doctoral dissertation-a study of interpersonal attrac-
tion.
