DELINQUENCY
An Application of Cluster Analysis
Michael J. Hindelang
Joseph G. Weis
the availability of computers for research purposes in the
social sciences facilitates the analysis of new problems of a
kind and magnitude which were formerly difficult, if not
impossible, to research and makes possible more precise and
rigorous investigations of old problems. The present paper
will attempt to expose the reader to a computer application
of cluster analysis to a criminological problem. This will be
done by tracing the steps taken by the authors in their
solution of a substantive problem in their research into the
etiology of juvenile delinquency; specifically, the testing of a
theory of delinquency by using multivariate statistical pro-
cedures.
AUTHORS' NOTE: Computer time necessary for this research was
provided through the Computer Center, University of California,
Berkeley, California.
MICHAEL HINDELANG received his doctorate in Criminology in 1969
from the University of California and is currently Assistant Professor of
