Research in environmental
and community strategies
for the prevention
of alcohol problems
BY ROBERT F. SALTZ
A sociologist with the Prevention Research Center (2532 Durant
Ave., Berkeley, CA 94704), Dr. Saltz has worked on several
evaluative studies of environmental approaches to alcohol
problems prevention, including server intervention training
approaches, under a National Alcohol Research Center grant.
Though environmental and community prevention are often
considered together, as we have today, there is a crucial
distinction, which should be clarified at the outset. The
difference, one might say, is between strategy and tactics.
Environmental strategies take the view that social and physi-
cal environments have a strong mediating, if not direct,
effect on an individual's consumption of alcohol and subse-
quent risk of suffering negative consequences from drinking.
The environmental influences may be positive, in that they
moderate a person's consumption, or they may increase
consumption and risk of ill effects. Research in this area
