LIDDELL LEAVES NORTHWESTERN


             Mr. LEON M. LIDDELL, Professor of Law and Law Librarian
        at Northwestern University, having served university law
        libraries for over thirty-four years, is looking forward to a
        fruitful retirement beginning in early December.
             As an educator and librarian Mr. Liddell has been associated
        with the University of Connecticut Law Library, the University
        of' Minnesota, University of Chicago and since 19'74 with
        Northwestern
             Mr. Liddell's career in law began at the University o' Texas
        when in 1937 he was awarded a J.D. and admitted to the Texas Bar.
        He practiced law with Hartford Accident & Indemnity Co. and
        Pacific Mutual Life insurance Co. in Gainesville, Texas until
        1941, when he became Chief of the Legal Branch at the Chicago
        Quartermaster's Depot for the U.S. Army during World War II.
        In 1946, discharged as a Major, he was also awarded a degree
        in Library Science from the University of Cnicago.
             During the time from 194b to 1946 Mr. Liddell was an
        Assitant Professor of Law and Law Librarian at the University
        of Connecticut, and was also involved with tne Connecticut
        Library Survey, studying state library services. In 1949 he
        went, to the University of Minnesota and was Professor of Law
        and Law Librarian there, where he taught courses in Legal
        Bibliography and International Law, until 1960. In 1960
        Mr, Liddell became Law Librarian and Professor of Law at the
        university of Chicago where he not only taught in the Law
        School but also in the Graduate Scnool of Library Science,
        becoming Law Librarian Emeritus in 1974. In 1974 he became
        Professor of' Law ana Law Librarian for Northwestern University.
             Mr. Liddell has been very involved in A.A.L.L.,
        A.A.L.S., C.A.n.L. ana S.L.A. He has also served on
        numerous committees with far reaching results in all of
        these associations as well as the American Bar Association.
             As a law librarian Mr. Liddell believes in the role
        of the library as a means for serving not only one's own
        immediate community but also the public at large. He
        feels that at Northwestern University he has accomplished
        a great deal in terms of collection building and feels
