1. Introduction
The two vignettes that follow explain this article's title.
1. Sometimes mid-life provides cause for pause to reflect on things
important. Such has been the case for one of the authors, a dyed-in-the-
wool promoter of hook and release angling for many years. While
growing up, he absorbed himself in Field & Stream and Outdoor Life
magazines, vicariously living through famous writers. He admired
their exploits of battling sport fish on light tackle, then releasing them
into streams and lakes. Hook and release angling was the mantra of
those he so looked up to and, as time marched on, he tried to emulate
them. Indeed, in later years, he became a vocal public proponent of the
concept. Such was the situation until, while extolling same to a saucy
but nonetheless sage sibling over wine, some words expressed by her
caused him to stop and think. The comments made, have, no doubt,
been expressed many times before. Perhaps on this occasion they were
particularly effective because of timing. The message, without putting
too fine a point on it, was this - the author must be smoking something
illegal to truly believe any fish welcomes impalement and restraint by a
hook, thrashing in the water attempting escape, then being released by
its tormentor. The author now fishes only to put food on the table.
2. The co-author was travelling home for lunch from his university
one day when he witnessed a near-catastrophic automobile accident. A
young, male driver was exiting the parking lot onto the main street of
the university, which, at the time, was in the process of being repaved
