Outreach Project-
Here to Serve Yo-
BY DWIGHT L. SMITH
DIRECTOR, AFVILIATE
OUTREACH PROJECT
The further I go, the more I under-
stand that it is imperative to work
a great deal to achieve what I seek.
... In the end, I am excited by the
need to render what I personally ex-
perience.
-Claude Monet
While in Chicago for the Annual
Meeting in August, I had the good
fortune to hurriedly view the Mo-
net exhibit at the Art Institute of
Chicago. Although I enjoyed the art,
I had more appreciation and empa-
thy for the artist's thoughtful in-
sight expressed in the foregoing
quote. It is apparent to me that the
virtual army of volunteer lawyers
who are the Affiliate Outreach
Project (AOP) has personally expe-
rienced the deep satisfaction and
benefits of public service and is ea-
ger to return those benefits.
The AOP is the multifaceted link
which allows the Division and its
more than 300 affiliates to ex-
change information, stimulate and
develop public service projects, and

provide assistance in project man-
agement. Simply put, the AOP ex-
ists to facilitate the delivery of
public service.
How are these lofty goals
achieved? Primarily through the
four component parts of the AOP:
National Conferences; the Affiliate
Assistance Program; the Public Ser-
vice Subgrant Program; and The Af-
filiate newsletter.
Please consider some of the ben-
efits the AOP offers you and your
affiliates.
National Conferences
As you read these words, Rick Bien
and his team are finalizing plans for
yet another outstanding National
Conference (highlighted on pages 4-
5 of this issue). Young lawyer lead-
ers from around the country will
converge on Boston, MA, October
25-27, to experience a stirring ar-
ray of award-winning public ser-
vice programming.
We encourage affiliates which

cause of the AOP's commitment to
you, special travel reimbursement
is available to first-time affiliates.
Please contact your district repre-
sentative immediately to be recom-
mended for this special reimburse-
ment. Those who have previously
attended a national conference
know that the AOP will reimburse
three members of each affiliate a
maximum of $150 each to help de-
fray travel expenses.
It certainly is not too early to
mark your calendar and begin
planning to attend the May 9-11
Spring National Leadership Skills
Conference to be held in Scotts-
dale, AZ. Additionally, we invite
you to submit your affiliate's most
outstanding projects to the Na-
tional Conferences Team for pos-
sible presentation in Scottsdale.
Affiliate Assistance Program
The Affiliate Assistance Team, un-
der the direction of Chair Jerry D.
Fenn, Jr., is making a concerted ef-
fort to revive dormant affiliates and
to organize affiliates where none
exist. And, as always, the Affiliate
Assistance Team is ready to pro-
vide help in planning, implement-
ing or maintaining public service
