Instruction Manu
BY WILLIAM R. BAY
DIRECTOR, AFFILIATE
OUTREACH PROJECT 1989-90
If there was an operating manual for ba
associations, I am sure there would be
trouble-shooting page just like this one.
And the solution most often mentioned
would be the Affiliate Outreach Project or
AOP.
What Is It?
It is a multifaceted approach to public
service, calling on young lawyers
throughout the country to work to-
gether through the American Bar As-
sociation, with state or local bar
associations literally to reach out to
people in an effort to educate them
about our system of laws and to en-
sure that every person has equal
access to legal services. It sounds
impressive, and it is.
Who Is the AOP?
Young lawyer volunteers who, like
yourself, sense a responsibility to
our profession and the communities
in which we practice.
How Is It Done?
* Through publications such as
this one-The Affiliate-which
feature public service projects
that you can implement in your
community and bar leadership
strategies to help you motivate
young lawyers for public ser-
vice.
e Through how-to project pam-
phlets and by giving the names
of people to call who have been
there and seen those projects
through.

 Through seed money from the
AOP's Subgrant Program to help
you begin a public service proj-
ect that needs extra funding to
be successful.
* Through technical experts, cho-
sen to meet your specific needs
and to help you design strate-
gies and public service pro-
grams.
 Through national conferences,
where public service projects
are discussed and demonstrated
by young lawyers who have im-
plemented them.

* Through the enthusiasm that is
generated from interacting with
other yeung lawyer leaders
throughout the country at na-
tional conferences.
What Do We Ask?
Your commitment to work with the
AOP can mean that collectively we
can have an impact in serving the
public. As you turn the pages of this
issue, I hope you become excited
about the possibilities. U
