Kamehameha I (reigned 1795-1819) was the first paramount
chief in Hawai'i to assume the role of monarch in the
Western tradition, and he succeeded during his own reign in
preserving the traditional structure of Hawai'ian social orga-
nization. Essential to this structure was the kapu (tabu)
system, a network of behaviors and beliefs that regulated
everything from the smallest details of food preparation to
the grandest of heiau (temple) ceremonies.
