O F all the cities of the American Union, Philadel-
phia was certainly the most worthy, in all
points of view, to be the seat of the resplendent festival
by which the Americans have just celebrated the Cen-
tennial of their Constitution.  In fact, one encounters
here at each step the mementos of the War of Independ-
ence, and of the creation of the American Union. The
descendants of the old Philadelphia families-the Coxe's,
Wistar's, Morris's, Rawle's, Meade's, Burd's, Shippen's,
Biddle's, Pennypacker's, Cadwallader's, and so many
others, of which the members distinguished themselves
in that eventful epoch in the councils and on the battle-
field-have guarded preciously the glorious heritage
which their ancestors have transmitted to them, and in
no part of America, is patriotism more ardent and glowing
than in this great city, which was the veritable cradle of
the modern United States. In the other cities of the
Union, especially in the West, patriotism and attachment
to the Constitution are also pure and sincere; but no
direct bond attaches the inhabitants to this glorious past,
