Queen Square, London WC1N 3AU. Price £10.00.
A wide-ranging reference work on the law of defamation, this book includes
summaries of the law in over fifty countries. The appendices include outlines of
important libel action in the United Kingdom and overseas during the past ten years
with the amount of damages awarded in each case and the important subject of the
recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments is also comprehensively covered.
Mr. Carter-Ruck has considerable experience of the law of defamation and also a very
readable style of writing.
The result is a clear and comprehensive textbook for the lawyer and publisher
wishing to master this complex subject, a reference work to be kept readily to hand
and in which any specific aspect of the subject may be easily traced, and also a book
to be read for enjoyment. He is to be congratulated on achieving with complete
mastery all three aims.
GIBSON'S 1876-1962: A CHAPTER IN LEGAL EDUCATION by R. H. Kersley,
M.A., LL.M. Published by Law Notes Lending Library Ltd., 25 & 26 Chancery Lane,
London WC2 1NB. Price £1.75.
All past pupils of Gibson & Weldon's feel a special affection and gratitude to the
firm and to its Partners who, by a mixture of threat, humour and persuasion, were in a
large measure responsible for the many hundreds of thousands of solicitors and
barristers qualifying. This book traces the history of the firm from its formation and
with many amusing anecdotes tells of the lecturers and the pupils. Mr. Kersley was a
lecturer at the College from 1931 and knew well all the personalities who worked
there. He has succeeded in writing a very entertaining and immensely readable book,
of interest to all those who were once pupils. There are photographs, and a foreword
by the Right Hon. Lord Widgery, Lord Chief Justice of England, a former lecturer at
Gibson's.
