THE LAW SOCIETY. APPEAL FRO-M THE CHANCERY DIVISION. Solicitor- Person -Interpretation - Right of women to examination and admission by Law Society-Solicitors Act 1848, 6 & 7 Vict. ch. 78, sees. 2, S5, 48-Solicitors Act 1877, 40 & 41 Vict. ch. 25, secs. 9, 10-Solicitors Act 188S, 51 & 52 Vict. ch. 65, sec. 10. A woman is not a person within the meaning of the Solicitors Act 1843, and the Acts amending the same, and rules and regulations made thereunder, dealing with the qualification, examination, admission and enrolment of per- sons as solicitors of the Supreme Court; and on that ground, therefore, is properly refused admission to the preliminary examination held by the Law Society. Decision of JOYCE, J., 109 L. T. Rep. 36, affirmed. The plaintiff, Gwyneth Marjorie Babb, was desirous of being admitted and enrolled as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature in England, and of doing all things necessary in pursuance of that intent. The defendants, the Law Society, were incorporated by Royal Charters, and appointed by the Solicitors Act 1843 and Acts amending the same to be Registrar of Solicitors of the Supreme Court, and charged. by the Solicitors Act, 1877, with the authority and duty of holding at least three times in every year preliminary, intermediate, and final ex- aminations for the qualification of persons for admission and enrolment as solicitors of the -Supreme Court, and like- wise charged with the management and control of such ex- aminations, and with the making of rules and regulations with respect to the mode of conducting such examinations, and the times and places thereof.
