I. INTRODUCTION
The day begins as any typical day in suburban America;
mom, dad, and children get ready for the day. Dad buckles the
kids into their car seats as the daily routine begins. Mom is taken
to work. Next, Dad drops each of the children off, at a different
facility, and then proceeds to work, or so he believes, until late in
the afternoon when he finally realizes his fatal error.
This scenario is all too familiar on hot summer days.
Children are often left alone in the family vehicle as a result of
parental ignorance or forgetfulness. Some parents believe it is
acceptable to leave their child in the car alone while they run a
quick errand.' In other instances, the child is forgotten in the
