PROGRAM OPERATIONS
OASDI Benefits
AT THE END of August 1977 the old-age, sur-
vivors, disability, and health insurance
(OASDHI) program was paying more than $7
billion in monthly cash benefits to nearly 33.6
million beneficiaries-$739 million a month higher
than the amount payable in August 1976. The
increase in the monthly amount reflects, basically,
the result of the net addition of more than 1
Iniillion beneficiaries since August 1976 and the
5.9-percent automatic cost-of-living increase in
benefit rates that went into effect in June 1977.
The OASI program accounted for 84 percent of
the gain in the total amount of monthly benefits
