The nature of the testimony required to prove a rape charge,
as well as the role of the victim as prosecutrix in the court
process, cause rape to be viewed as a unique crime.' There is
little serious literature on either topic. This article will focus on
the role of the victim in the court system. It is the outcome of
research which is part of a larger project studying all aspects of
the post-rape adjustment of the victim. Its purpose is not to
develop systematic hypotheses but rather to sensitize the reader
to the problems involved and to suggest social and legal
