mob in Rakhine lynching a group ofRohingyas in broad daylight... Out offear and
despair, I have looked at different possibilities ofgoing to work in Malaysia or trying
the visa lottery to the United States. But the truth is I don't really have any prospect

MAUNG ZARNI, a longtime Burmese human rights activist, is a non-resident research fellow with the
Documentation Center of Cambodia. He has organized numerous international conferences on the plight
of Rohingyas, and he initiated the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal on Myanmar in 2013. As a PhD student,
he founded the pioneering internet-based Free Burma Coalition in 1995.
NATALIE BRINHAM is an Economic and Social Research Council PhD student in law at Queen Mary
University of London. She has worked for many years in NGOs in the UK and Southeast Asia on forced
migration, trafficking, and statelessness. Her work has been published (with Maung Zarni) in Forced
Migration Review, Pacific Rim Policy and Law Journal, and elsewhere.
