Leadership abilities are critically important in many areas of society in
the United States and globally. Millions of the world's citizens are affected
daily by the decisions-good and bad-of their political and governmental
officials even if those citizens do not have a choice in their selection.
Whether selected by democratic methods or not, people rely on effective
leadership to manage their lives, economies, and governments. It is
particularly important in some professions and some positions where
communities, employees, and other constituents rely on effective leadership
to move their organizations and society forward. Military officers and
*Patrick Bryan is a program manager and analyst at Systems Planning and Analysis in
Alexandria, Virginia and a retired U.S. Army officer. He served in a variety of leadership
positions during his more than 20 years of military service as both a Judge Advocate and Field
Artillery officer. He was one of the two architects of the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's
Leadership Center at the Judge Advocate General Leadership Center & School in Charlottesville,
Virginia.
Donald J. Polden is Dean Emeritus and Professor of Law at Santa Clara University where he
has taught courses on leadership for lawyers for many years. He is the founder of the Institute for
Lawyer Leadership Education at Santa Clara and has published many journal articles on lawyer
leadership. Polden lectures widely on the subject of leadership for lawyers, including at the U.S.
Army Judge Advocate General's Legal Center & School in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is Chair-
elect of the Section on Leadership of the Association of American Law Schools and served as a
panelist at the Baylor Law School conference Vision for Leadership on September 16, 2020.
