handle is hein.journals/cdozo40 and id is 3131 raw text is: FESTSCHRIFT INTRODUCTION Melanie Lesliet It is my pleasure and honor to introduce this published tribute to my esteemed and wonderful colleague, Arthur Jacobson. Arthur has been a member of the Cardozo faculty since 1977, and has had a great deal to do with establishing the Cardozo Law School faculty's reputation for producing serious and deeply intellectual scholarship. He has attracted great thinkers to our school and to our faculty, many of whom have contributed to this volume. Arthur's outlook is broad and inclusive. A defining characteristic of Arthur's work is that he illuminates connections that are often invisible to others. He asks us to take seriously as law systems and actors we do not usually think of as law at all. Consider, for example, his Yale Law Journal article, The Other Path of the Law,, which looks at how actors in the informal economy have an impact on legal jurisprudence. His Ph.D. thesis explored the political philosophy of Hegel, and in more than 20 articles for the Cardozo Law Review he has been in dialogue with philosophers from Plato to Spinoza. Arthur's work bridges what sometimes seemed to be opposing camps, whether they are intellectual, political, or philosophical. Together with Cardozo Professor Michel Rosenfeld, he wrote a book called The Longest Night: Polemics and Perspectives on Election 2000, which explored the 2000 election and Bush v. Gore. The book grew out of the divergent politics of its co-editors, but instead of being a source of tension their opposing views gave the book its value and integrity. His interest in opposing opinions and systems also gave birth to an interest in comparative scholarship. In recent years, he brought that interest to Jewish law. With Cardozo faculty member Rabbi J.
