ABSTRACT Three archival data sets were analyzed to explicate the probabil-
ities of being arrested, convicted, and incarcerated for the commission of
felony crimes enumerated in the Uniform Crime Reports, to assess the rela-
tionship between growing correctional populations and crime rates, and to
determine the relationship between murder rates and capital punishment over
the past 21 years in the U.S. Issues pertaining to deterrence, rational choice
conceptions of criminogenesis, and vicarious learning were explored in consider-
ation of the findings. [Article copies available for a fee from The Haworth Docu-
