JUSTICE CHARLES R. DONALDSON
1919-1987
Charles R. Donaldson's service in and to the Idaho system of jus-
tice spanned an entire era. He was admitted to the Idaho bar in 1948,
and began service on the trial bench in 1964. He began his service as
an Idaho Supreme Court justice in 1969 and, until his death in Octo-
ber, 1987, authored more than 567 opinions.
During those years of the Donaldson tenure, the decisional law of
Idaho evolved and changed, sometimes in small, gradual steps and, at
times, in massive and abrupt upheavals. Justice Donaldson largely par-
ticipated in the movement toward change, but occasionally, in certain
areas of the law, resisted change. He will be remembered not only for
his opinions, but for his innate sense of fairness, and most particularly
for his patience, tolerance, and good humor, which enabled him to
bring about a consensus within the court.
