W hen famed scientist Jonas Salk was asked
whether he planned to patent his polio vac ®
cine, he reportedly answered, Can you
patent the sun?
Science has come a long way since Salk's revolu,
tionary vaccine was introduced in 1952. Today, scien-
tists are racing to patent not only vaccines and medi-
cines but also the actual human tissues on which those
products work.
Even before the scientists published discoveries
from their map of the human genome in February, the
race was on to patent various individual genes that
form the blueprint for human life.
The motives were clear. Not only is there a place
in history for those who follow the genoine map aind
find the cures for all sorts of diseases, but thefinanbial
rewards for being first to do so could nake Bill Gatgsi
billions look like pocket change.
