I am very pleased to welcome Dorothy Shea,
Librarian at the Supreme Court of Tasmania, as
Editor of the Australian Law Librarian (ALL).
This is the first time in the history of the journal
that an Editor has been appointed for a period of
3 5 years. Previously, the journal rotated every
two years around each of the States. With each
rotation it became more and more difficult to find
people willing to give of their time and expertise
and, after inviting expressions of interest, it was
decided to appoint Dorothy Shea. Dorothy has a
sound working knowledge of publishing and
editorial processes and has said:
The printed Journal is, and will remain for the
foreseeable future, the core medium for
dissemination of ideas within the law librarian
community. However I believe we need to
look beyond the existing environment where
the roles of contributors, readers and publish-
ers are well defined and dare to explore the
ways in which new technologies can enhance
the exchange of knowledge and information.
It would be challenging (and hopefully
rewarding) to be given the opportunity to
extend the recognition and appreciation of the
Journal beyond the printed page.
With this in mind, Dorothy has been speaking
with the Copyright Agency Limited in order to
ascertain the position of the Journal with regards
to the matter of copyright. It is hoped that once
the issue of copyright has been settled that back
issues of the Journal will be made available
through electronic sources.
Two new sub-committees have been formed
within the National Executive to assist with the
work of the Australian Law Librarians' Association
AUSTRALIAN LAW LIBRARIAN. Vol 16 No. 1 2008

(ALLA) - the Communications Committee and
the Conference Committee. The purpose of the
Communications Committee is to provide advice
and counsel to the Editorial Board of the
Australian Law Librarian and the ALLA website.
Jeannine Goasdoue, the ALLA Webmaster, Sue
Woodman and James Butler will be speaking with
a consultant for the purpose of reviewing the
overall design and content of the existing site.
There is also a need to have a password protected
section which will store and archive financial
documents and records of Minutes of various
meetings.
The work carried out by members at both
national and state levels is entirely voluntary.
We are indebted to these people for the giving
of their time, expertise and energy to areas such
as website development and monitoring, the
various committees and office bearing positions -
our sincere thanks to last year's office bearers and
especially the outgoing co-editors of the ALL from
the ACT, Robyn Nielson and Yvonne Hopkins.
The intended role of the Conference Committee,
which will be chaired by John Botherway, Vice
President, is to provide consultation, advice and
assistance on conference-related matters including
timelines and schedules, prospective speakers,
document templates for letters to publishers and
trade exhibitors and generally provide a process
for tapping into the prior experience of the
National Executive and prevent the major
duplication of effort which results from the
organisation of conferences in isolation.
The Code of Conduct on the website has been
revised to include a statement that, Notices
about job vacancies are acceptable on a one-off
