Lindsey *** All too often language barriers separate American and other common law lawyers from important, interesting and even humorous writings by civil law thinkers and scholars such as Rudolf von Jhering, the great nineteenth century German legal philospher. Professor Levy has performed a valuable service by translating In the Heaven for Legal Concepts and making this classic available to the English speaking bar. Jhering lived from 1818 to 1892.1 At the age of twenty-four he received a doctor's degree in law from Berlin University.2 Three years later he obtained his first law professorship, and, during the course of a long academic career, he taught at several German law schools, spending sixteen years at Giessen and twenty years at Gottingen. 3 While briefly serving at the University of Vienna, Jhering was en- nobled by the Emperor of Austria.4 Jhering's writings have justly been called mountainous.5 Altogether he wrote more than twenty volumes on Roman law, German law, and jurisprudence. 6 Very few of Jhering's works have ever been translated into English, however, a situation that Hart terms an intellectual tragedy. 7 Professor Levy's translation * Originally published in German as Im juristichen Begriffshimmel.
