The   Road   to Marriage Equality and Democratization

ofIntimacy in Taiwan

As of today, no country in Asia has passed marriage equality
laws (same-sex marriage) or has provided same-sex partner-
ships with the same legal rights and status as heterosexual
married  couples. Most countries in the world that have
struggled for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex
(LGBTI)  family rights have placed a particular emphasis on
marriage. In this respect, Taiwan's legislative attempts and
societal debates concerning diverse families (including, but
not limited to, marriage equality/same-sex marriage) can be
a source of inspiration for other legal jurisdictions wishing
to develop similar movements. Moreover, Taiwan's Diverse
Families Movement (which focuses on three different types
of family and is not marriage-centric) is different from sim-
ilar movements and discourses in Europe and the Americas
that focus mainly on same-sex marriage. The uniqueness of
the Diverse Families Movement in Taiwan is worth noting
for this reason. This article will first provide a background
to the Taiwan Diverse Families Movement, and then explain
the three bills of Diverse Families proposed by the Taiwan
Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights (TAPCPR). In
short, the Diverse Families Movement insists that separate
