     LEGAL INFORMATION FOR SOCIAL
JUSTICE: THE NEW ACRL FRAMEWORK
AND CRITICAL INFORMATION LITERACY

                 Yasmin Sokkar Harker

                          Abstract

Law Librarians and legal educators who want to develop social
justice awareness in their students should consider the ACRL
Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (the
ACRL Framework). This paper first summarizes the history of
critical information literacy and describes its fundamental connec-
tion to social justice. Next this paper describes the historical
development of the ACRL Framework and relates the Framework
to critical information literacy. It then places these concepts into
the context of legal education and the law library. Finally, this
paper argues that the ACRL Framework can be used as a tool for
educators to promote critical information literacy in the legal
research classroom, and presents examples of using the Frames for
classroom discussions and activities.
