detailed enough to give readers of all levels an adequate understanding of the topic.
Those individuals more familiar with aspects of criminal law will find this work to
be rather broad in its coverage, but still worthwhile as many prominent legal schol-
ars and sociologists from the United States and abroad have contributed articles.
26 The second edition of the Encyclopedia of Crime and Justice will certainly
take the place of the widely known first edition on many library shelves and will
be used for years to come. As a consequence of the work's comprehensive nature,
it is suitable for use within academic law libraries, large university research col-
lections, and public libraries. Law students, undergraduate students, and members
of the general public will find this work an excellent starting point for research in
criminal law and behavior.

27 Supreme Court Justices: A Biographical Dictionary is a ready-reference source
pertaining to the lives and major opinions of the justices of the United States
Supreme Court. Arranged chronologically by date of appointment, each entry
includes a brief summary of the justice's life as well as a black-and-white photo-
graph or engraving. The summaries range in length from two to four pages, and
each starts by listing the years the justice served on the Court and ends with a brief
bibliography for further reading.
28 The strength of Hall's book is that it is ideally suited for high school and
college students as well as general readers. For example, Supreme Court Justices
provides a glossary of legal terms such as witness, mandamus, and brief, and
it contains a seven-page chronology of historic events and a bibliography, a table
of contents, and an exceptionally detailed index. Hall's book also contains four
appendixes pertaining to: (1) each justice's appointment to the Court; (2) each
president's appointment(s) to the Supreme Court; (3) important Supreme Court
cases; and (4) the text of the Constitution of the United States. The nearly fifty-
page section about important Supreme Court cases lists the cases alphabetically
and is current through the Supreme Court's October 1999 Term. The list also pro-
vides a one- or two-sentence description of the holding for each case, although it
is often so broad as to be useful only for someone seeking a general idea about the
decision.
