NORKO & MADELON BARANOSKI This Article examines the ways in which Connecticut and federal legislative efforts on gun control have affected persons with mental illness in the state and includes a brief history of that legislation in the context of tragic gun violence. There have been two major legislative and policy directions: (1) federal and state prohibitions on gun ownership related to several types of mental health adjudications; and (2) Connecticut's 1999 statute permitting gun seizures by law enforcement officers in situations of increased risk of harm to individuals-the first statute of its kind in the nation. We present available data about each of these two efforts, which show no support for the proposition that laws targeting persons diagnosed with mental illness will curb gun violence. The implications of these data are discussed, as well as the deleterious effects of stigma on the public health. The strengths of Connecticut's gun seizure law as an approach to reducing violence by people in distress are reviewed. 1609
